Use prescribed fire: effect on understory plants
A replicated, controlled study in 1965-1979 in temperate woodland in Minnesota, USA (White 1983) found that annual prescribed burns increased understory plant species richness. Numbers of species was higher in burned (25/100 m2) than unburned plots (13/100 m2). Data were collected in 1979 in ten plots (100 m2) in a 10 ha control (unburned) area and in 11 similar-size plots in an 11 ha burned area (annual prescribed burns 1965-1978).
