Summary
Rehabilitation of injured and treated birds
A study in 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Mastrangelli et al. 2019) reported on the unsuccessful rehabilitation of a beached black-browed albatross Thalassarche melanophris. The bird was found with waterlogged sandy feathers, was visibly sick, and had diarrhoea. It was given water, glucose, an electrolyte replacement (0.9% NaCl solution) and an antibiotic (enrofloxacin, 10%, 20 mg/kg/d). Later, the bird was force fed with mashed fish, saline solution and vitamins. Despite signs of recovery, the bird died after five days. Examination of the body identified lung damage, parasites and bacterial infection.
