Awards and Honours – Professor Bill Sutherland

  • 2024: elected winner of the 2024 (31st) International Cosmos Prize (by The Expo ’90 Foundation, Japan) for his “elegantly effective approach to conversation … a ground-breaking achievement that helps preserve numerous species, ecosystems and ultimately the natural environment of the entire Earth, and is deserving of the International Cosmos Prize for the holistic and integrated strategies it embraces”.

  • 2024: awarded the CIEEM Medal - the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s highest accolade; awarded annually, recipients of the Medal must have made an outstanding and/or lifelong contribution, in relation to ecology and environmental management. Bill was awarded the medal for being “an exceptional ecologist and conservation scientist, an outstanding naturalist and teacher, … widely acclaimed for his generous encouragement of students and early-career researchers. He is an outstandingly deserving recipient of the CIEEM Medal.”

  • 2024: elected an international member of the American Academy of Arts and Science (AAAS); members are elected for their for exceptional contributions in their fields and professions.

  • 2023: elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, (FRS); elected candidates must have made a substantial contribution to the advancement of science.

  • 2023: elected Membership of Academia Europaea (MAE); membership is awarded for sustained academic excellence in the candidate’s field.

  • 2023: awarded the International Ecology Institute (ECI) Prize in terrestrial Ecology; prizewinners are distinguished by outstanding and sustained scientific achievements in the field of ecology.

  • 2021: appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours “for services to evidence-based conservation”.

  • 2019: received Honorary Membership of the British Ecological Society, for his “leadership of Conservation Evidence which has revolutionised the use of scientific evidence by practitioners. His work on resolving the most important unanswered questions in ecology and in conservation, has inspired many other scientific disciplines to follow suit.” Honorary Membership is the highest award the BES gives, recognising exceptional contributions at international level to the generation, communication and promotion of ecological knowledge and solutions.

  • 2013: awarded the Distinguished Service Award of the Society for Conservation Biology; winners are selected for extraordinary contributions to conservation biology and the preservation of Earth's biodiversity.

  • 2012: awarded the British Ecological Society Ecological Engagement Award; recognises ecologists who have made an outstanding contribution to getting ecology out of the scientific community and used by policymakers, the media, business, conservationists or other parties.

  • 2005: awarded the Marsh Award for Conservation Biology (ZSL/Marsh Charitable Trust) for his “extensive contributions to evidence-based conservation”.

  • 2001: awarded the Marsh Award for Ecology (BES/Marsh Charitable Trust); winners are selected for their outstanding current research record which is having a significant impact on the development of the science of ecology or its application.

What Works in Conservation provides expert assessments of the effectiveness of actions, based on summarised evidence, in synopses. Subjects covered so far include amphibians, birds, mammals, forests, peatland and control of freshwater invasive species. More are in progress.
